PBR is now kicking off a tour of outdoor Southern rodeo arenas that typically begins in New York City’s Madison Square Garden (you can ride taxis or buses, but still love rodeo, apparently) and ends later in the year in Las Vegas. Later in 19th-century Texas and California, both Mexican and Anglo-American riders simply tried to ride a bull until it grew exhausted.īut things were a little different at three competitions in Ocala, Arcadia and Okeechobee last month, conducted by the premier organization for this singular and fast-growing sport, Professional Bull Riders Inc., based in Pueblo, Colo. Rodeos in general and bull riding in particular started with the Spanish in Mexico, when men tried to ride the bulls to death in contests called “jaripeo,” according to a history of the American cowboy.
